Hortie – a person who has a degree in horticulture.
*This is NOT a real word. In the horticulture community, this is how we refer to ourselves. We are all horties.
Plant Nerd – this is not a degrading term. We horties embrace our inner nerd when it comes to plants. We are all openly proud to be plant nerds.
It is difficult to put into words the connection I have to plants, color, and design. I love that beauty can be found in every aspect of the outdoors if you are looking for it. I get so excited when I see a beautiful landscape, an old tree, a flower in bloom, a unique design concept, incredible architecture, etc. Some may even say I get overly excited. I can’t help it. When you have a passion, be passionate!
A few years ago, I went on a trip with some girlfriends to Charleston, SC for the first time. We had so much fun walking and eating our way through down town. I was the only hortie in the group. If you’ve ever been to Charleston, you know that for someone who loves all things design, this place is like Disneyland. As we walked around, I realized I had to do my very best to see every garden, every house, I wanted to see over every wall (side note – those walls were such a tease! I could hear the water feature, but I couldn’t see it).
I may or may not have tried to scale this particular wall. FYI – While Creeping Fig likes to climb, it is not easy to climb on Creeping Fig.
I love these curves and the use of the vertical space!
Did I mention the window boxes everywhere?
When I returned home from my trip and reviewed my pictures, I had 164 pictures of plants, 2 pictures of food, and 0 pictures of my girlfriends. Not a single one. Clearly, I need to assess my priorities. The pictures don’t lie. My name is Claire Goldman and I am a plant nerd. It’s a good thing spring is around the corner!
